Phirosmani Through the Eyes of Picasso

On the Study of the Semantics of the Bichvinta Apse Mosaic

In the decor of the Bichvinta mosaic special attention of scholars was from the beginning attracted by the complex composition of the apse mosaic with the medallion showing the monogram of Christ given at the center, around which doves, blossoming branches of pomegranates and acanthus leave are represented. Below one finds an image of a cow and a calf sucking its milk and a five-line Greek inscription: "for praying of Oreli and all his house".
