In December 1991, reactionary forces in Russia, with the participation of armies located in Transcaucasia, additional military personnel sent from Russia, local criminal bands and the Communist nomenklatura, began aggression against the Georgian Republic. In early 1992, overthrow of the elected government in Georgia was followed by the establishment of a marionette-like regime of occupation, first in military form, then as a so-called “state council”.
